In 2012, as I was releasing the trio record "o que será" with Javier Colina and Al Foster I was able to get a two week tour in Spain with the trio. The whole first week was at the wonderful Cafe Central in Madrid. It was the first time we played (apart from the recording of "o que será" in NY the year before, which made a big impression on me, feeling that it can't be possible to have a better band for me).
I thought to myself, when else will I have a chance to play with this two beautifoul and inspiring men together? I had to record it. So I took my 3 mics,computer,soundcard...I tried to make it easy for me, as I HAD TO PLAY apart from pressing Record each night...very important. In fact,
I enjoyed myself so much that some nights I forgot to record...and the audience seemed to enjoy themselves too! and Colina, and Al, what a thrill it was for me. These two men are the warmest, most generous, intuitive and mature musicians and yet they keep an almost childlike fresh aproach to the music each night that makes it an adventure.
Life is an Adventure!
-For Regulars Only, by Dexter Gordon, from the great record "doin' allright", is a favourite opener, it sets a happy and swingin' mood but open enough for our creative minds.
-Mil Perdoes, by my favourite Chico Buarque, is a long melody that gets us in an always compromised melodic trip , and in this take you might be surprised where this trip takes us...to a party!
-Medo de Amar, by Vinicius de Moraes. I put a bit of Coltrane/Tyner on the intro that resembles to "after the rain" to bring this wonderful brasilian tune closer to Jazz. That night we were quite tense in the bandstand for some reasons, and somehow it was probably our best night! I love how life and music interact in the most surprising ways.
-You'll Hear It, my original tune, made for vamping! the first time Al played it and went into his original way of playing a backbeat it made me feel I was playing with Miles!
-Medley. Here's to Ellington, the master. "A single petal of a rose "to let us go in peace. And then a very unknown Ellington tune,"le sucrier velours", fascinating. We finish with another one of my heros, Lee Morgan and his "stop start" from the great record "the procastinator".
